Mevagissey Male Choir
ABOUT MEVAGISSEY MALE CHOIR
Currently numbering almost 60 singing members, Mevagissey Male Choir is one of the most successful in Cornwall. Formed in 1974 by local men in Percy Mitchell’s Portmellon boatyard, the Choir still regularly fields up to six of its founder members on the risers. Each of them will have sung in the majority of the 1,000-
But our numbers also include many younger men, attracted by our modern approach and our enjoyable social life.
Our popularity, we believe, reflects our willingness to embrace all genres of music, and to take on ever more challenging pieces, without sacrificing quality. We are also fortunate to be blessed with a first class music team. Musical Director Graham Willcocks has now completed 20 years with us while Matthew Fox, who joined us in 2013, is our talented Accompanist and Assistant Musical Director.
Our ‘mission’, apart from raising money for good causes, is to entertain. As one of Cornwall’s more progressive and versatile male choirs, we are particularly proud of our extensive repertoire that ranges from Bizet and Puccini to Robbie Williams and Freddie Mercury, from musicals to shanties, and includes traditional choir music and songs from Cornwall’s own rich choral heritage.
We practise every Monday evening, except in August, when we give free concerts on the Mevagissey quayside, and bank holidays. Practice evenings start at 7.30pm in St Andrew’s Church, Mevagissey, and everyone is welcome to come and listen.
If you can’t get to see us, you can hear us on any one of six CDs, which you can find here. Oh, yes, and we have a fantastic social side. We get together after concerts and practices, and at other events, with wives, partners and families – and with Friends of the Choir, too. At the end of the day, we’re in this for fun!
